The Lutheran church in the Toolo area in Helsinki was designed by Timo and Tuomo Soumalainen. The site was selected in the 1930s, but the church was not completed until 1969.
The interior was excavated and built into the rock but is bathed in natural light entering through the glazed dome.
The organ was built by Veikko Virtanen.
The ceiling is a giant disc made from 22 kilometres of copper wire.
The walls have been left as rough hewn stone. The church is often used as a concert venue due to its exxcellent acoustics. Temppeliaukio Kirkko is one of Helsinki’s most popular places for visitors with good reason.
How extraordinary Debra. Only in Finland perhaps.
I hVen’t seen anything like it anywhere else.
It looks pretty amazing to me.
It is a great building.
I do like it. As I have a soft spot for rocks 🙂 I can imagine I would love the ambiance.
It is quite warm and welcoming despite being made of rocks.
