I love to visit the Kauppahalli, beside the harbour, whenever I am in Helsinki. The food on display is so different from our markets in Australia. Everything seems exotic and I would love to have a kitchen where I could prepare some of the delicious things on offer.
There are more familiar things as well.
As well as food to take home to cook, there are several tiny restaurants where you can have lunch or a snack. I have had several delicious meals here.
Kauppahalli was opened in August 1889, just a couple of years before my grandfather was born.I wonder if he had a delicious fish soup there before he sailed off to his new life in Australia in 1912. The market is open on weekdays from 8.00 – 18.00 and Saturdays from 8.00 – 17.00
The market as part of everyday life is a wonderful thing, bringing people together. I love the markets in France. I only get there about once a year.
Best,
Conor
I think markets give a great insight into how people live in a city or town. I love them and try to find them where ever I am. The markets in France are wonderful. I love the one in St Tropez and some of the Paris markets are divine. The Florence central market takes some beating.
Perpignan (Les Halles) is one of my all time favourites.
very nice !!! if i have chance i will go to there!!!!
Helsinki is a beautiful city to visit.
Gorgeous and delicious Debra. The salmon baked in bread has me intrigued…
There are some interesting and delicious pastries available at the market.
Lovely photos. My no.1 son would be in heaven with all that salmon!
I always eat salmon when I am in Finland…it is delicious.
Yum! I miss fresh salmon, maybe Ill have to hop a plane to Helsinki to get me some! Colourful, lovely photos as always.
The salmon in Finland is excellent.
My favorite place!
I’m not surprised!
It must be so tantalising to visit those fantastic markets and not be able to buy and cook the food. Food markets tell you so much about the culture of a country don’t they.
I think food markets are a great showcase for a city, or a country. I love to see the different types of food and how it is displayed.
This is my kind of place! I’d love to sample everything. 🙂
Me too! One day I will rent an apartment in Helsinki with a kitchen.
I particularly love those deep fried fish. Give me also a lot of steamed/boiled rice and that’s heaven already for me. 😉
I would like to experiment with some of the exotic looking foods in the market.
Kauppahalli seems to be an excelent market, I would really like to try the finnish specialities, one day.
I love Finnish food!
We were at Kauppahalli during early April which, goes without saying is one of the most beautiful ever markets. If you haven’t already tried wild Bear Prosciutto it has a wonderful flavor. Not strong, but smooth and an all encompassing taste.

I love the markets. I will be back in Helsinki in June and will definitely be back.
