I have heard that if you can’t get it at Stockmann it is not worth having. The enormous department store that takes up an entire city block (Mannerheimintie, Pohjoisesplanadi, Keskuskatu and Aleksanterinkatu, try saying those in a hurry) is the largest in the Nordic countries. It has 7 floors plus the basement.
The first Stockmann business was founded on February 1st, 1862. The business expanded and moved to the present site in 1922 and the building, designed by Sigurd Frosterus, was completed in 1930. Finland’s first television broadcast was made from Stockmann in 1950.
The window displays are always excellent.
I went to see the installation in the store.
Last time I was there Marimekko was the featured brand. There is always something interesting going on at Stockmann.
The selection of stock is excellent and the food hall is not to be missed. Be prepared to spend a lot of time in Stockmann when you visit Helsinki.
Happy Birthday Stockmann.
