My friends Kirsi and Neil are in Helsinki now and took these great photos of the fabulous installation called Meren Elamat…Sea Lives.
The creatures are made from bits of plastic.

Helsinki harbour is beautiful, perfect for a boat trip to Porvoo on the Runeberg.
We sailed out on a gorgeous morning, a little hazy, but great anyway.
We glided past Suomenlinna.
…past King’s Gate.
…and along the coast.
We arrived at the entrance to Porvoo.
Porvoo will be the subject of the next post…it is a wonderful historical town.

El Fant is a welcome addition to the food scene in Helsinki.
The decor is clean and bright and the food looks delicious.
I ordered the blueberry porridge and liked it so much I went back the next morning and had it again.
The carrot cake was also good and the coffee, from a local roastery, is excellent.
I’m sure El Fant will do very well.
Find El Fant at number 3 Katariinankatu, not far from Senate Square and the harbour.

The weather in Helsinki is wonderful right now. It is warm and sunny and it seems everyone is outside enjoying it.
I came upon a group of folk dancers in Esplanadi practising…it looked like fun.
Another group was on stage strutting their stuff.
Summer in Helsinki is great.

When I was in Helsinki late last year I was disappointed to find the main Marimekko shop on Esplanadi closed for renovation.
I returned earlier this year and was very pleased to see the newly renovated shop. It is not quite as big as before, and it is no longer on Esplanadi, but further down Mikonkatu.
It can also be entered via the Kampi shopping centre. There are several other places to buy Marimekko in Helsinki, but this one has always been my favourite.

Havis is a pretty nautical style restaurant beside the Helsinki harbour.
The interior is very elegant.
I chose the Havis menu. You can have 3 or 4 courses. I decided on 3, leaving out the cheese course.
First came an amuse bouche. I can’t really tell what it was, but it was delicious.
Mushroom soup followed and was also very good.
I really like Arctic char, which was the reason I chose the menu. It was served with scallops, potatoes and fennel sauce.
Dessert was sorbet with muesli and white chocolate served 3 ways…yum.
Helsinki has many good restaurants to choose from…I would go back to Havis any day.
