It is almost summer in Helsinki and there are baby birds everywhere. The weather has been amazing and we have spent some time walking beside the sea. We have seen nesting birds and new chicks making the most of the gorgeous sunny days.

It is great to see new life everywhere. The birds are quite comfortable near people and go about their daily lives in peace.

On my recent visit to Helsinki lovely friends took me to Lake Tuusula, about 30 minutes from Helsinki.

We visited the house of Finnish painter Pekka Halonen. (1865 – 1933). He was famous for his Finnish landscapes and people in Realist style.

His beautiful wooden house sits by the edge of the lake. The position provided him with perfect inspiration for his art. He designed the house himself with his brother Antti and called it Halosenniemi.

I wish I could show you the inside of the house but there was a strict, no photo rule. Instead come for a walk around the outside. It was a bleak autumn day on our visit, but the garden and the views from it are enchanting. I must return in spring.

Halonen’s studio was opened for the first time to the public in the 1950s. Tickets cost €8 and is open Tuesday – Sunday. The house is stunning and it is a wonderful insight into the life of the artist.

I spotted the white duck last year when I was in Helsinki in winter. I am pleased to say that the duck is still in the water at Toolonlahti and doing well and fitting in with the others.

People leave food for the ducks to get them through the winter.

I saw a duck friend on my walk around Toolonlahti. The ducks ran to meet her and were happy with her offerings.

It seems a few ducks have learned that it OK to stay behind for the winter.

What could be better than a trip into the Finnish countryside and a Kesamokki…summer cottage.

Jodie and Allan enjoyed some walks in the forest collecting berries…blueberries, bilberries, lingonberries, red currants, white currants and wild strawberries.

…and the results of all this work.
