the Monument to Jean Sibelius

Jean Sibelius is Finland’s most famous composer. Among other symphonies he wrote Finlandia, and his music played an important part in establishing the Finnish national identity.

He was born in Hameenlinna in 1865. Finland celebrates a Flag Day on 8th December, the anniversary of his birth. It is also known as the Day of Finnish Music.

The Sibelius Monument was unveiled on September 7th, 1967. The main part of the monument consists of about 600 acid-proof stainless steel tubes, hand textured, and suggestive of a birch forest. It was designed by Eila Hiltunen.

A second sculpture was added showing SibeliusĀ as a young man, when he composed most of his music.

The monument is in Sibelius Park in the district of Toolo.
