Egg

Egg is an interesting restaurant beside the harbour, below the Russian church.

Unsurprisingly, they serve omelettes, and they are very good.

The decor is simple.

Goodbye summer

Summer is almost over in Helsinki. Here is a reminder of how beautiful the city looked in this lovely season.

Johan & Nystrom is a great place to have coffee. In the warm summer months there are tables outside beside the water and the view across the harbour is lovely.

New Arabia shop

Beautiful Arabia ceramics have been around since 1873 when the brand new factory was built near Helsinki. Within a couple of years the output from the factory accounted for half of the total annual ceramics production in the whole country.

Arabia ceramics are known the world over for their beautiful design and practicality.

A brand new shop has opened at 23 Pohjoisesplanadi.

Arabia Esplanadi

It is full of gorgeous things.

Market Square is a fun place to be in summer. There are colourful stalls selling fresh produce and hand made items.

The wonderful open air pool is waiting nearby…what a fun thing to do in the city.

On Helsinki Day 40 seals, almost 7 feet tall, were placed in Senate Square to highlight the need to protect the Baltic Sea.

At the end of summer the seals will leave to square and take up residence around the city. In the meantime, they look wonderful in Senate Square…be sure to drop in to take a look if you are in Helsinki.

I think it is an excellent reminder to look after all our seas and oceans.

A great way to get a birds’ eye view of Helsinki is to take a ride on the Skywheel beside the harbour.

Each gondola has 4 seats, air conditioning and a glass floor. The glass is slightly tinted to add privacy.

The tinted glass gives an interesting  colour to the surroundings, but the view is fabulous. The wheel turns 3 times in each ride.

The cost is €12 for an adult, €9 for children between 3 – 11. Children under 2 are free.

Gaijin

Restaurant Gaijin is the brainchild of Tomi Bjorck and Matti Wikberg. It is their second restaurant.

Gaijin Helsinki

Gaijin offers unique flavours from Japan, Korea and northern China, with a delicious modern touch.

The restaurant is in the stylish Bulevardi at number 6. I dined alone so I can’t show you a variety of meals, only mine. For my main course I ordered salmon with Asian flavours. I can’t come to Helsinki without ordering salmon.

Gaijin Helsinki

Dessert was a liquorice and almond cake with icecream…perfect.

Gaijin Helsinki

I will definitely return to Gaijin with others. They do excellent dishes to share.

I spotted the white duck last year when I was in Helsinki in winter. I am pleased to say that the duck is still in the water at Toolonlahti and doing well and fitting in with the others.

People leave food for the ducks to get them through the winter.

I saw a duck friend on my walk around Toolonlahti. The ducks ran to meet her and were happy with her offerings.

The iconic Finnish glassware, iittala, is 100 years old. They have turned blue to celebrate.
